Bandshell. The Iraq Veteran’s Against the War (IVAW) will be marching

with us in solidarity. At the end of the march, within sight and sound

of McCormick Place, members of IVAW will conduct the closing ceremony

where they will return their medals to NATO. It will be a moving

1) We will be showing “The Battle for Seattle” this Wednesday May 9 at 6 PM at BooCoo.

2) No downtown Evanston activities the next two Saturdays so that everyone can participate in the events down in Chicago.

3) Next Saturday is the People’s Summit down at Occupy Chicago at 500 W Cermak. People will be meeting at the Howard CTA at 11AM to head down. There will activities from 10 AM both Saturday and Sunday. Check the Occupy Chicago website for all the details.

4) We continue weekdays behind the Civic Center our divestment campaign against Chase.

May Day! May 5th and May 9th

1) This Tuesday is May Day. Come join us, the students, the unions, and Occupy Chicago for the march from Union Park at Ashland & Randolph (1500W) at the Ashland station on the Green Line starting at 12 noon and going to Federal Plaza in the Loop. This will be a major event in the Chicago Spring and will send the message that we have the right to exercise our First Amendment rights and not be intimidated. Look for Occupy Evanston at the SW corner of the park. Some of us will meet at 11 at the Davis CTA to head down together.

2) Next Saturday we will be again at Church & Sherman to continue our campaign to have the city divest its Chase holdings, an effort to which the city is reacting. Note that next Saturday we will be there at 11 AM with the GA in Panera at 12 noon instead of 1.

There is a training program on non-violence beginning at 10AM at the Library and continuing into the afternoon.

3) We continue most weekdays at noon behind the Civic Center.

4) Our next movie is The Battle for Seattle on Wednesday May 9 at 6 PM at Boo Coo.

April 23rd-28th and May 9th Movie Night

1) The week of April 23rd we continue behind the Civic Center at noon.Next Saturday April 28 we return to Church & Sherman at noon with the General Assembly at 1 PM sharp because we will then be heading to the Library for the 2 PM presentation on NATO.

2) Our next film will be The Battle for Seattle on Wednesday May 9 at Boo Coo at 6 PM. Well timed for the upcoming May 20 NATO protest.

3) Continue calling City Hall at 311, asking for the City Manager or the Mayor, and tell them to divest from Chase. The City Manager told us they had changed their checking from Chase and would be moving from Chase by September because “it was the right thing to do.” The City Treasure then told us that the checking had not been switched and that whoever submitted the best bids (including Chase) would get the City’s business. There is an obvious discrepancy here. But notice the impact we are having.

1) Next Saturday, 21 April we will again be at the Jewel just south of Dempster on Chicago at noon with the General Assembly at 1PM in the Whole Foods across the street. We also continue at noon weekdays behind the Civic Center.

1) Wednesday April 11 we show the film The Trial of Goldman Sachs with Chris Hedges and Cornell West at Boo Coo at 6 PM.

2) We continue our campaign for the City to divest its holdings in Chase Bank at the noon hour weekdays behind the Civic Center.

3) As announced last week, this coming Saturday April 14, we will be at the Jewel at 1128 Chicago Avenue and the Whole Foods across the street at noon. Our General Assembly will be in the Whole Foods at their cafeteria at 1 PM.

4) United Against Eviction of Rogers Park will hold a retreat on the subject of home occupations and eviction blockades on April 18 at 7463 N. Ridge. Starting time to come.

We continue our presence in back of the Civic Center at noon weekdays. And we will again be at Sherman and Church next Saturday at 12:00 with our General Assembly at 1:00 in Panera. Our campaign continues to have the City divest its holdings in Chase Bank. Mayor Tisdahl tods us they are looking into it. We want to be sure they look into it and then divest all their holdings, not just part.
Wednesday is our next film at Boo Coo, on Greg Palast and Venture Capitalism at 6 PM.
Thursday we will be at the Hilton Orrington at 5 PM to welcome Rahm Emanuel to his awards dinner with New Trier. We will be distributing our own dishonorable award. This promises to be our biggest event thus far. Copied below is further information.

This Thursday March 15, the Orrington Hilton in downtown Evanston will host the second annual New Trier High School Alumni Awards (newtrieralumni.org). One of the recipients is Rahm Emanuel along with film director David Zwick and actress Ann Margaret. Coincidentally , Donald Rumsfeld was one of last years awardee’s.

As chief of staff for President Obama, Emanuel was probably more responsible than any other one person along with Tim Geithner and Larry Summers for ensuring that the Wall Street Bankers who created the financial meltdown were not held accountable for their crimes. (Pulitzer prize winning journalist Ron Susskind gives an excellent account of the first three years inside the Obama administration in his book “Confidence Men”.)

It was hardly surprisng that Emanuel pushed so hard against reform of the financial sector. After serving as an adviser in the Clinton administration until 1998, he was appointed to the board of directors of Freddie Mac for which he received $320k plus later stock sales for attending six meetings over a period of one year. At the same time Emanuel was hired at the investment banking firm of Wasserman Perella despite having no MBA or banking experience (BA in liberal arts Sarah Lawrence ‘81, MA speech Northwestern ‘85) and received $16.2 million over 2 1/2 years to peddle influence.

In 2002 Emanuel won Rod Blagojevich’s (for whom he served as campaign adviser) 5th congressional seat in congress. He was appointed to the House financial services committee overseeing Fannie and Freddie, but skipped every hearing. During his days in congress Emmanuel was the number one recipient of Wall Street lobbyist money among democrats or republicans and by the time he left had become the 12th richest member of the House.This is all from Wikipedia.

In 2002 during the run-up to the Iraq war Emanuel spoke forcefully in support of Bush”s position to invade Iraq.

After being appointed Obama’s chief of staff, Emanuel, along with Geithner and Sommers undermined every effort by other staffers to prosecute or hold accountable in any way the Goldman Sachs, Citibank, Countrywide, Lehman Brothers, etc who profited from the financial bubble they created after it burst all over us (all depressingly documented in Susskind’s book).

Now that Emanuel as successfully bought his way into his new gig as mayor with the help of his corporate boosters at the Sun Times and Tribune we are seeing him reward his benefactors bigtime. While describing himself as a “progressive” and “reformer” he has aggressively pushed what looks more like a Scott Walker agenda of union busting, charter schools and privatizing government services.

As if, that’s not enough Emanuel’s got big plans to hobnob with the NATO bigwigs in May for which he has been gifted $55million from the feds to pay for robocops to keep away the “anarchists” (anybody who has a different opinion).No doubt a big item on the agenda is how to push us into a war with Iran.

Let’s welcome Hizzoner to Evanston on Thursday and present him with our own “award”. We need to let Mayor 1% we’re not interested in corporate crumbs, wage slave jobs and selling off our public assets to corporations. Bike lanes yes, Bank of America sign over the Chicago river, give me a break.

Be part of the Chicago Spring!

1) Our call for the City to divest its holdings in Chase Bank is producing results. Last week the city Treasurer, Marty Lyons, stated that the City is issuing RFP’s for banks to apply for the City’s business. Mayor Tisdahl at Friday’s demonstration stated that she is working on this and seeing what she can do. We need to keep the pressure on since even if they move some of their investments from Chase, that is not enough. Be sure to call the City and contact your council person and tell them to go forward with full divestment from Chase.

2) This coming week we will continue at the noon hour outside the back of the Community Center, and on Saturday we will again be at Sherman and Church at 12 noon, with a General Assembly in Panera at 1PM.

3) Wednesday, March 14 at Boo Coo at 6 PM is our next movie about Greg Palast and Vulture Capitalism.

4) Thursday, March 15 New Trier will have its alumni awrds dinner at the Hilton Orrington from 6-9PM. Rahm Emmanuel is scheduled to receive one of the awards. Occupy will be there in protest. Plan to join us.

We will have our handouts (copies attached), and we encourage everyone to make a sign (statement of your choice) and bring it. And tell those you know and please email your network—we need the largest turnout possible.

The other weekdays we will continue to be out back of the Civic Center at the noon hour. We will also convene again at Sherman and Church at noon next Saturday with the GA following in Panera at 1 PM. Look around for us because we grab space where ever it is available.

Our campaign calling upon the City of Evaston to divest its holdings in Chase Bank continues. We will be behind the Civic Center weekdays at noon (except for Jack on Wednesdays), and next Saturday, February 25 at noon at Church and Sherman by Barnes & Noble and Panera. General Assembly at 1 PM in Panera.

We are also planning on demonstrating on Friday, March 2 outside the mayor’s State of the City Address at the Hilton Orrington starting at 11 AM. Be sure to try and join us then!

Our campaign to have the City of Evanston divest its holdings in Chase Bank continues. We will again be behind the Community Center at the noon hour during the week (Jack cannot come Wednesdays, but others are welcome). On Saturday February 18 we will again be at Church & Sherman (Pinera/Barnes & Noble/Radio Shack/Pret a Manger) leafleting about the City and Chase. The General Assembly will be in Pinera at 1 PM.

This coming week we will again be out behind the Civic Center each weekday for the noon hour. Our focus continues to be calling upon the City of Evanston to divest its holdings in Chase Bank and shift them to a community bank. Be sure to call the City at 311, ask for the Treasurer and tell him you support this divestment campaign.

To accommodate those who requested that we also be out Friday evenings, the last two Fridays we were at the Century Cinema from 7:00 to 8:00, but no one else showed up. So we have decided for the time being to just continue with the weekdays at noon plus Saturdays.

This Saturday, February 4, we will be in downtown Evanston, on the four corners by Panera, Barnes & Noble, Radio Shack, and Pret a Manger from 12:00 till 1:00. We will then adjourn to Panera for the General Assembly starting at 1:00.
